Corrugated Board
A dependable fluted board built for shipping pressure, stacking strength, and day-to-day courier handling. A practical choice when protection matters as much as presentation.
A candle carton has to account for more than the jar diameter. Glass weight, lid height and empty space around the container all affect how the box behaves once it’s packed, carried or shipped.

Two 200g candles don’t necessarily need the same carton. One may come in a straight-sided glass jar with a flat lid. Another might have a wider base, raised lid or decorative top that adds several millimetres to the finished dimensions.
We’d therefore measure the complete candle rather than work from wax weight or jar capacity. Glass also makes packed weight important. A carton that feels substantial when empty can behave differently once a heavy jar is sitting on its base.
For custom candle boxes, the first decisions should be internal size, board and product support. Artwork comes afterwards. Candles sold alongside other gift products can also use presentation gift packaging where a more substantial opening style is required.
Pick up a packed candle and gently move the box. If the jar can travel noticeably from side to side, the internal fit probably needs another look. Sometimes reducing the carton dimensions is enough. In other cases, an insert makes more sense.
An insert can centre the jar, create clearance around delicate areas and stop glass containers from moving against other products in a gift set. For these arrangements, fitted box inserts can be developed around the jar base and other components rather than filling unused space afterwards.
Not every candle needs rigid packaging. Cardboard candle boxes work well for many everyday retail ranges because they’re relatively compact and provide useful printable panels for branding and product information. Rigid candle boxes approach the product differently. They’re more relevant where the box itself forms part of the gift presentation or where a substantial structure is part of the intended pack format.
The candle’s price alone shouldn’t decide between them. Weight, retail environment, presentation and how the customer opens the package all matter. For two-piece presentation formats, lid-and-base boxes provide another structure worth considering.
A window can work particularly well when the candle label, wax colour or container is part of the selling point. But simply cutting a large opening into the front isn’t enough. With candle boxes with window designs, we’d first establish where the jar sits. The opening can then be positioned around the label or another feature that actually needs to remain visible.
Too much empty space around the jar can cause it to shift away from that viewing position. Where product visibility is important, custom window packaging can be planned together with an insert so both elements line up correctly.
A candle gift box might contain one jar, two candles or a candle alongside matches, accessories or another home-fragrance product. We’d arrange those items before deciding the final outer dimensions.
Equal spacing isn’t always the best layout. A heavy glass candle may need a larger supporting area, while lightweight accessories can occupy narrower compartments.
The same principle applies to candle subscription boxes. When the contents change regularly, a flexible internal arrangement may be more useful than developing a completely new outer carton for every collection.
Retail packaging and courier packaging aren’t automatically the same thing. A printed paperboard carton can work well on a shop shelf but may still need an outer corrugated box for delivery. Glass jars introduce additional handling considerations because the package has to deal with the distribution journey as a whole.
For candle shipping boxes, the packed weight, movement, internal support and outer corrugated construction should be considered together. Businesses dispatching candles directly to customers can use made-to-size shipping boxes around the finished retail pack rather than expecting decorative candle packaging to perform every job.
The front panel doesn’t need to carry every piece of information. With custom printed candle boxes, branding can take priority on the front while fragrance details, burn information, product instructions, barcodes and other required information use the remaining panels.
The dieline should be approved before detailed artwork is finalised. That shows exactly where folds, glue areas and openings will appear. Black, brown, white and other branded candle boxes can then share the same structural specification while using different artwork for fragrances, collections or seasonal ranges.
A slightly tight carton may seem acceptable when you’re testing one sample. Pack a few hundred candles and it becomes a different problem. Staff shouldn’t need to force every jar through an insert or repeatedly manipulate the lid to get the carton closed. At the other extreme, excessive clearance shouldn’t need correcting with extra packing material.
Before producing candle boxes wholesale, we’d check the real candle, insert and finished carton together. Once the fit is approved, the same dieline can be retained for candle boxes bulk orders while artwork changes between scents and collections.

How do I measure a candle for a custom box?
Measure the finished candle at its widest point and full height, including the jar, lid and any decorative components. The insert and required packing clearance should also be considered before final dimensions are set.
Does a glass candle jar need an insert?
Not every jar needs one. An insert becomes useful when the candle has room to move, needs to remain centred or shares a gift box with other products.
What material should I use for candle boxes?
Paperboard can work for many individual retail candles. Rigid board is more commonly considered for presentation packaging, while corrugated board may be required as outer packaging for shipping.
Are window boxes a good option for candles?
They can be when the jar, label or wax needs to remain visible. The window position should be planned around the candle's packed position, and enough board should remain to maintain the required structure.
How should candles be packaged for eCommerce shipping?
Start with the complete packed candle, including its retail carton and internal support. The outer shipping specification should then account for the packed weight, movement and expected distribution conditions.
Can the same candle box be used for different fragrances?
Yes, when the candle containers have the same dimensions. The structural dieline can remain unchanged while colours, fragrance names and other printed artwork vary between products.
